BIG PINE - GLACIER LODGE
RIDE OVERVIEW
Glacier Lodge is an awesome ride up into the Sierras out of Big Pine. You do almost 4k feet of elevation gain over 10 miles...the start is fairly relaxed but once you get to the big swooping switchback you had better be ready for a fight because it is business all the way to the top. The vast majority of this climb is very exposed and in the warmer months it can be uncomfortable.
While averaging 6.6%, the climb does feel pretty consistent with a couple of shorter steeper sections that tip into the double digits. Overall, very doable but you are going to earn the right to tick this one off your list.
At the top you are rewarded with a fairly chill finish in a beautiful pine forest covered road that provides some needed shade and respite after the tough section leading up to it.
It is worth noting that the descent is fast, like really fast. Don't forget about the super tight switchback near the bottom. Goes without saying, make sure your bike and brakes are ready.
LINK-UPS + NEARBY RIDES
If you are looking for a big climbing day, the other Big Pine climbs are a great add-on to this ride - Waucoba Pass, Westguard, or even Bristlecone.
Alternately, you could start this ride from Bishop to add on an extra 30 miles round-trip and another 1k feet of climbing.
